Valid since 2017: Do you already know in detail about the CPR regulation for cables?

In recent decades, the density of cables and other conductors in new buildings and structures has grown continuously. This circumstance brought the topic of fire protection also for cables on the agenda of the EU. Since July 1st, 2017, power, control and communication cables, which are permanently installed in buildings, are therefore also considered construction products and must therefore meet fire safety characteristics in accordance with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). The EN 50575 standard for cables and wires has since time become mandatory and has focused primarily on product safety. It regulates the most important performance criteria of cables, as well as the standardization of test methods.

What is the specific objective of the Construction Products Regulation?

The primary objective of the regulation is to increase safety in buildings. Construction products are classified, assessed and certified according to their fire behavior and are thus comparable in all EU countries.

What performance criteria does the regulation look at?

The regulation governs the behavior of cables in the event of a fire. Among other things, the following points are considered:

  • Heat release
  • Calorific value
  • Fire spread
  • Smoke development
  • Smoke density
  • Flame dripping
  • Acidity

What classes are distinguished?

  • Aca – No reaction
  • B1ca – Very low reaction, no flame spread, no fire spread (1.75 meters), very low heat release
  • B2ca – Low reaction, no flame spread, no fire spread (1.5 meters), low heat release
  • Cca- Reduced reaction, no flame spread, no fire spread (2 meters), reduced heat release
  • Dca – Improved reaction, no flame spread, improved heat release
  • Eca – Basic reaction, no flame spread
  • Fca – No requirements

Due to the thermoplastic and halogen-free materials of the cables, they currently reach max. class B2ca.

Who is affected by the Construction Products Regulation?

It applies to manufacturers, distributors, users, installers, planners as well as public administrations and authorities.
